Busy creating content

Ciao a tutti,

It's been very busy here!  I've spent that last couple weeks working on products like reformulating and pricing our incense. We've even had a few nibbles about wholesaling the incense to some stores.  :-)

For the past week or so, Mike and I have been looking at redoing the Streghe.US website. I think it needs a new look, better UI, a place (permanent home) for my blog, and...   forums.  Yup. We're looking at getting forums set up specifically for Italic Craft.

The forums would be for all manner of topics on Italic-American traditions and practices as well as for folks native to Italy and Sicily.  Although the focus will be primarily Italic Craft as spiritual and religious practices (Stregheria) there will be room for Italic Craft as a magical practice (Stregoneria) allowing overlap with more broad discussions including mystical and folk practices (Benedicaria, la magia popolare, etc.) regardless of spiritual path.

The plan is to have user profiles and let folks either register at the site or use their existing IDs for other sites such as FB but to not left folks post to the forums unless they register.  I would like to get it set up so users can create their own groups so they can narrow down particular areas of interest to them.

Suggestions are welcome!

Benedizioni,

When Life Gives You Lemons...

Here is a good article about Limoncello, that intensely lemony liqueur loved by millions.

http://www.italiannotebook.com/food-wine/amalfi-lemon/

It focuses on the Amalfi coast area.

My favorite Limoncello wasn't from Amalfi, but was instead from the tiny island of Capri. That's [ˈkaːpri] with the emphasis on the first syllable.

That was, until I tasted the Limoncello from Sicily which is made from their GREEN lemons. The Sicilian green lemon tends to be less acidic and more floral.

Whichever type of lemons are used, this is a nice Italic beverage that you can get in most local liquor stores.

Ci vediamo più tardi!

Sept 7

Sept 7
Early morning – with about 2 or 3 hours left until we reach Rome, we have a medical emergency. The crew just came on the PA and asked for any doctor or medical professional to announce themselves. Apparently, one of the older passengers (with a tour group) seems to have fainted and possibly had a minor seizure of some sort.
It really reminds me that I am far overdue to take that first aid/cpr course. I really feel helpless not being able to contribute anything. From what I’ve seen, it appears that she is dehydrated and overheated.

Breakfast just arrived: chocolate croissant (heated), 2 dark chocolate Milano cookies, and yogurt. I scandalized the Italian flight attendant because I asked for a big glass of milk. The some water. Then a cup of coffee. Finally, I asked for a dish of fruit. That’s when she caught on and realized that I was practicing my “eating Italian”. I’ve been cut off from the snack cart. First Starbucks, now Alitalia.

Our ill passenger is being attended to by a nurse – another tour guest. They’ve given her 2 saline drips and that seem to be helping quite a bit. I guess that I was close.
Wow, already starting our descent. Safe landing! Delay in getting off the plane while the paramedics come and check on the passenger. They’re going to be taking her to a hospital in a nearby town (Ostia?). It’s a good thing that I opted for the flight with the 5 hour layover instead of the flight with the 1 hour layover.

Now I have time for a leisurely lunch and some shopping. Like Logan, plugs are scarce here. I forgot that lines in Italy are just imagination. It took quite some time to get through passport control but once up to the counter, it was less than 15 seconds.
Lunch – I couldn’t resist:

Hmmm.  Did I mention that I forgot to bring a coat? I guess that I will just have to resign myself to buying a nice Italian one at some fashionable shop. :-)

Before leaving, I found that there was a profound lack of useful information regarding USA travelers getting an EU number and cell phone. There’s a reason for that. It’s not difficult. Most EU airports have a Vodafone, WIND, or TIM store. I went with TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile). I got a (basic) Samsung Android smartphone, PayAsYouGo, 200 local minutes, and 1 Gig of data for less than the phone would have cost in the US. Of course, it is the bottom of the line phone. The nice phones (Galaxy S4) are even more expensive. The nice TIM man explained how the phone works, set up my balance, and quickly programmed my phone.

OMG, no. Look at this picture:

Hopefully you can’t make it out clearly. It’s the display at a high end men's’ boutique – “Real WILD rabbit fur.” I don’t want to know more. It looks like bad shag carpet. As you can see, the camera on the new phone isn’t all that great. No autofocus. Sometimes, like now, that’s a blessing.

From here, I board the plane to Catania and then make my way by bus to Siracusa where Sergio will pick me up.

OMGs, everyone in Catania looks like my relatives! I guess I should have expected that  but WOW what a shock.

Fair warning – even though you have to pre-purchase a ticket for the Bus to Siracuse, it is still first come, first serve. In my case, first to get their luggage onboard and your butt in a seat, first served. These little old ladies are fast and have bony elbows! For consolation of not being rude during boarding, mMy butt is currently next to a VERY attractive Sicilian man. He is ½ Greek and ½ Sicilian “I’m not an Italian. I sono Siciliano.”  I guess language won’t be as much of a problem as I thought.

Here is what some of the ride to Siracusa looks like:

This is the actual view from my balcony overlooking the Temple of Apollo on the island of Ortigia:

I’ll try to add a quick video:

OK, I don't think the video worked.

OK, the cellular guy has a sense of humor. I just got a sound notification telling me that I have a text. My phone now whistles at me. :-)

10 Days and counting...

I had wanted to start posting more but getting ready for my trip has really taken all of my time!  10 days and counting until I fly off to Sicily for a month.

I have my Euro cash, my bills paid, lodging and other arrangements made.  I have to pack and get a phone when I arrive.  I am pretty sure that I've taken care of most everything.

Each day, I'm doing 1/2 - 1 hour of Rosetta Stone. It's really a great course. If you're thinking of learning a language, it's worth the money especially when you compare it to the price of more traditional courses for language.

Stregacrafts is up and running.  since I hand create most items that we carry,  but we're not going to be taking any new orders until I return. Note - I was just informed that I accidentally crashed the site. It's off line as of this writing my Mike is going to fix it as soon as he gets back from lunch.  Sorry!

OneStopOccultshop is up and running. We'll still be taking orders through the site. I've arranged it so our suppliers will drop ship orders directly to our customers and I'll be staying in touch with them while I'm gone.

Streghe.us is up and running and we've got some surprises planned. I'm working with a friend to convert the site to a WordPress UI including forums. The goal is to make it a real community site focused around resources and intelligent (and respectful) discussion regarding Pagan religious Witchcraft with origins in Italy/Sicily, Europe, & the USA.

http://www.vinnierusso.com/TarotReadings is up and running. Although I am still taking phone readings until I leave, I am not able to do any in-person readings at this time.  While gone in September, I will not be available for phone or in-person readings.  When I return in October, I will be available for both and will be sure to post a notice.

The Sheaves of Demeter Coven is busy as well. In addition to the Chthonioi-Alexandrian and Italic material, we're currently doing 4 - 6 weeks of elemental workings. Each week is devoted to meditations on a particular element and how that element appears and interacts in our daily lives. The goal is both become familiar with the more traditional associations with the elements as well as forge our own personal associations with them and recognize when and how they appear in our daily lives.  By recognizing their appearance and interaction, we can better use our knowledge of them to steer our course more positively.

If you're thinking of doing some of your own elemental work, I highly recommend The Way of Four by Deborah Lipp. It's an excellent book written by an amazing Witch.

OK, back to work.

Ciao a tutti,

Vincenzo

Moving to Sicily for a month!

Ciao a tutti!

Yes, the heading is correct. I'll be moving to Italy for a month (September).  Why do I say moving instead of visiting? Well, I'm going to reconnect with my heritage and learn the language from native speakers/residents.  Although I'll have plenty of time for sight seeing, I'm mainly going to be focused on my heritage, the culture, and the language.  I'll be living on Ortigia and taking lessons there.  It's only about 45 minutes away from where my family is from.  Also, I'm going alone.  Mike will be staying here to take care of things and watch the animals.  This means that I'll really be on my own. It will be as much work as fun.

I've been thinking of doing this for quite some time and my reasons are varied.
I think that the best way to learn the language is from native speakers in the native culture.
I want to experience the modern culture from which I am decended.
It's a perfect way to allow me the time and focus I need to finish writing my book about Italian-American craft and the transition from the Old World to the New World and the shift in perspectives that accompany that.

My plan is to keep a travel log (here) and let folks know how I'm progressing. I'll be sure to post pictures of my adventures and updates on my progress.

I leave in 6 short weeks and have a lot to do before I go. First, http://www.OneStopOccultShop.com will still be operating. I will have high speed WiFi while in Sicily and Mike has it set up so I can easily have our suppliers dropship orders directly to customers.  StregaCrafts.com will not be filling any orders during the time that I am in Sicily since all of the products are hand made and shipped by me.

I've renewed my passport but still need to apply for an international drivers' license. Not that I plan on driving myself, but you never know.
I have ordered an original of my birth certificate so I can take it to CT and get an original of my father's birth certificate. That way, I can do some research into my paternal grandfather. Unfortunately, somethings have to be done in person so I will have to spend at least one day in CT tracking down any original paperwork on my paternal grandfather and when he immigrated to the USA. The records are... um... not exactly clear-cut. ;-)

The house where I am planning on staying while in Sicily looks over the ruins of the Temple of Apollo. This is the view from the balcony:

I'm going to have a lot on my plate in terms of places to go and things to see.  So far, I've made of list of the following:

Parco Archaeologico della Neapolis
Viale Paradiso
*Teatro Greco
*Roman Amphitheatre
*Orecchio di Dionisio
*Latomia del Paradiso
*Necropoli dei Grotticelli
*Fontana Aretusa
*Tempio di Apollo
*Miqwe
*Museo Archeologico Paolo Orsi
*Museum of Ancient Greek Theatre
*Temple of Demeter, Enna
*Fontana del Rato di Prosperina

Day Trips:
Town of Melilli
Ragussa
Malta
Mt. Etna (and many returns to Enna)

If you can think of anything that I simply HAVE to do while in Sicily, let me know!  I'll keep you all informed!

Ciao e benedizioni,

---Vincenzo
